Gutter offers a number of opportunities for aspiring writers and editors to get involved in the work of the magazine. See below for details.

Opportunities

Guest Readers

For every issue, Gutter invites an aspiring editor from Scotland’s BPoC community to be a Guest Reader, helping to read and select work for the print edition. Guest Readers play a key role in shaping the magazine.

The programme is highly competitive, and offers great editorial experience. Subscribe to our newsletter for announcements about the programme or find out more here.

Mentoring

This year, Gutter will be offering free mentoring for one prose writer currently living in Scotland. Mentoring will be provided by our managing editor Malachy Tallack, author of four books of fiction and non-fiction.

We’ll be releasing more details about this opportunity in August, so keep checking this page or subscribe to our newsletter if you’d like to know more.

Reviewing

In addition to fiction, essays and poetry, Gutter also publishes short reviews online and longer critical essays in our print edition, focusing on new Scottish books.

We’re always looking to expand our roster of reviewers, so if you’d like to write for us then please get in touch. Let us know about any writing and reviewing experience you’ve had before.
